Building an igloo is a simple idea that quickly becomes a real team exercise. Each group receives the specific tools, a defined area and a clear brief, and has to agree on a plan, divide the work and build a structure that is both sturdy and original. The challenge puts people in a practical situation where roles appear naturally: some lead the design, others handle the snow, others check that the structure holds.
The format is easy to follow for participants of every age and fitness level, because the work is shared and the pace is set by the team. Judging is based on criteria agreed in advance, such as solidity, originality and finish, so the result is discussed openly at the end. The debrief links what happened on the snow to what happens at work: how decisions were taken, how the time was managed and how members supported each other.
The challenge can stand alone as a half-day or day activity, or be followed by a shared lunch or a dinner in the same winter setting. It works for teams that want a concrete, memorable exercise with a clear outcome and no need for prior experience.
Objectives
- Build cohesion through a shared, concrete task
- Show how planning and roles work under time pressure
- Create a memorable result that the team can discuss afterwards
How it works
- 1We set the group, the zones and the criteria for judging with the client in advance.
- 2Teams receive their tools and a short brief, then have a fixed time to plan and build.
- 3Each igloo is checked and scored on the agreed criteria.
- 4A debrief links the exercise to the team's working habits.
- 5A shared lunch or dinner can close the day in the same setting.
Good to know
- No previous experience is needed. The work is shared, and the pace is set by each team.
