Where to Meet in France: Paris, the Loire, the Riviera, the Alps and Bordeaux

Five regions suit a distributed team meeting in France, each with different rail and airport access. Travel times by TGV and the nearest airport, and what each region is best for in a company gathering.

Start from where the team lands

The choice of region should follow the airports that participants actually use. Most distributed teams land at Paris Charles de Gaulle or Paris Orly, or at Geneva for participants travelling from the eastern side of Europe. From Paris, the TGV network reaches several regions in one or two changes, while regional airports such as Nice, Marseille or Bordeaux are useful for participants already in those parts of Europe.

For each candidate region, compare the door-to-door time from the main airport, not just the rail time. A two-hour train can become a four-hour day once transfers, luggage and waiting are added. Ask the venue for its transfer options and their duration in the morning and in the evening, when traffic is heaviest.

When the team is split between Paris and a regional office, a central regional venue with a direct rail link to Paris is often the fairest compromise. Confirm the timetable for the actual dates, since services change with the season and with works on the network.

Paris: the most connected, the least quiet

Paris offers the widest choice of venues, from convention centres such as the Palais des Congrès to private châteaux within an hour of the city, and it has the most direct flights. Typical journeys from the airports are around 50 minutes by road to central hotels, depending on traffic, and the RER and metro give quick access to most districts.

Its drawback is the pace. A Paris programme is often busy, and a group of several dozen people can feel dispersed in a large city. For working sessions, choose a hotel near a convention centre or a seminar venue outside the centre, where meeting rooms are quieter and easier to close off.

Paris is the natural choice for a board or leadership retreat that needs strong air links, or for a larger gathering that combines a working day with a gala dinner in a historic space. Check the calendar for trade fairs and public holidays, which can make hotels scarce and raise prices.

The Loire Valley: a château an hour from Paris

The Loire Valley is the classic choice for a residential seminar. The fastest direct TGV to Tours takes about one hour 13 minutes according to route listings, although many journeys take longer, so check the timetable for the chosen day. Tours is the gateway to the château country, and the valley's châteaux, gardens and vineyards provide a setting that is hard to replicate in a city.

The regional airport at Tours Val de Loire has a limited schedule, so most groups fly into Paris and continue by train. Plan a single transfer from the station to the château, and consider a coach for groups of more than a few dozen people, since narrow roads and car parks can be limiting.

The Loire suits three-day seminars, team workshops in the morning and a gala dinner in a historic setting. Ask each château for its meeting-room capacity, bedroom count and accessibility, and check the accommodation for participants with reduced mobility, since older buildings often have stairs and uneven floors.

Bordeaux and the Riviera: wine country and the sea

Bordeaux is about two hours from Paris by direct TGV. Route listings put the fastest direct services at around two hours four minutes, and typical direct journeys at around two hours to two hours fifteen. Bordeaux-Mérignac airport is about 12 km west of the centre, and the tram line A, extended to the airport in April 2023, reaches the city centre in about 35 minutes.

The French Riviera is further away. Direct TGV services from Paris to Nice take roughly five hours 40 minutes to six hours 40 minutes depending on the train, according to SNCF Connect. Nice Côte d'Azur airport serves Nice, Cannes and Monaco, and it is the main air gateway for the coast. For an incentive that includes a sea element, plan at least one full day of travel, and keep the working sessions in the morning of the day after arrival.

Marseille Provence airport is about 15 km from Marseille, and the fastest Paris to Marseille TGV takes about three hours four minutes, with an average of around three hours forty minutes according to Trainline. It makes Marseille a practical base for a Provence programme.

The Alps: Annecy and Megève need a transfer plan

Annecy is the easier of the two alpine options. Route aggregators estimate about three hours forty-seven minutes from Paris by rail, but timetables vary, so confirm the chosen service on SNCF Connect. From Geneva airport, Annecy is roughly 40 minutes by road according to the hotel information we hold, which makes a Geneva arrival convenient for an Annecy lakeside venue.

Megève is harder to reach by public transport. There is no direct TGV to the resort. Rail goes to Sallanches, about 13 km from Megève, followed by a bus, and schedules change with the season. Travel from Geneva airport takes roughly one hour 15 to one hour 30 by road, so a private transfer is the more predictable option for a group.

For both resorts, schedule the arrival day with a light programme and check winter and summer timetables separately. Mountain roads can be closed in bad weather, so include a contingency day in the itinerary when a programme depends on a transfer.
